Propelling California journalism leaders towards career success
The Propel Regional Training Series is the Maynard Institute’s professional development training program, and is part of the greater Propel Initiative, a strategic intervention to strengthen California local news. The first Propel Regional Training took place in April In San Luis Obispo in partnership with California Polytechnic State University.
Propel Regional Trainings are tuition-free. Breakfast and lunch are provided per day during training sessions and a Social Hour gathering is subsidized by the program as part of the community-building experience of the training. Participants are asked to shoulder their travel costs, but a limited amount of travel support is available for those who need it.
Each weekend-long in-person training offers hands-on workshops, discussions and coaching led by award-winning journalists and news management experts. The Propel Regional Training Series helps California-based editors and managers become more proficient and confident journalists and news leaders.
Propel Regional Training participants receive specialized coaching from our esteemed faculty of investigative journalists, documentary filmmakers, editors and media entrepreneurs.

- 5:30-7:30 p.m.: Maynard-sponsored Social Hour event in Burbank, location TBD
- Day 2: Friday, October 23, 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Day 3: Saturday, October 24, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The second training round of the Propel Regional Training Series, and its final offering for 2026, is in partnership with California State University at Northridge and will convene at the Los Angeles Burbank Marriott Airport Hotel.
This training for California-based early- and mid-career editors and managers focuses on the tools and frameworks needed to succeed in their newsrooms and careers.
Focusing on editing, leadership and management, curriculum will include such important professional growth sessions as:

- Fault Lines® in Management
- Managing the Big Project
- Editing Techniques You Need Everyday
- Ethical Editorial Decision-Making
- Immigration, ICE and Imperiled Civil Rights
- Harnessing AI Ethically in Sourcing and Editing
- Navigating Difficult Conversations
- Identifying Personal Values – A Deep Listening Exercise
Sessions will be led by award-winning and expert editors, newsroom leaders, professors and leaders from CSUN Journalism and the Tom and Ethel Bradley Center and Maynard Institute staff.
The training will be capped by a regional news leaders roundtable that will discuss the state of the media in the region and across the state. It will apply the Institute’s Fault Lines® DEIB framework in strengthening newsroom coverage and culture amid ongoing upheaval and polarization.
Continued learning, mentorship and peer support are available to those who register to join the Maynard Institute’s Communities of Practice program.

This training is entirely tuition free and two meals per day will be provided for the duration of the training. Participants are asked to cover their travel and lodging expenses as applicable. Limited, needs-based travel assistance is available.
This training is for early and mid-career editors and managers and features sessions regarding strategy, leadership, ethics and managing large projects or new or evolving topics in reporting.
