Gannett seeks a top editor for Reno Gazette-Journal award winning and groundbreaking news operation. This executive leadership position requires an individual with the highest level of journalism credentials, solid business acumen, and finely honed leadership skills. Must demonstrate proven understanding of the digital future of news and information and advance the seamless integration of digital and print. The editor must set the tone and strategic approach for content across all platforms. The Gazette-Journal enjoys strong readership in both print and digital formats, and a great relationship with the Reynolds School of Journalism, which is located on the campus of the University of Nevada – Reno (Mountain West Conference). Reno offers a unique mix of cultural, urban and family events along with easy access to world-class outdoor activities. The successful candidate must cultivate a deep understanding of the key audiences and communities to be served and create new approaches to more fully engage them. Additionally, the Executive Editor must work to balance customer needs with business imperatives, aligning resources to provide the greatest impact possible. The position reports to the Publisher.
Uphold the highest journalism standards across digital and print platforms and strongly support the First Amendment and execute watchdog reporting.
Lead planning and oversee execution of content strategies. Special emphasis is placed on digital and new media work. Creativity and an ability to develop and execute innovative approaches are essential.
Organize, manage and lead the Information Center staff by reinforcing the mission, structuring the department to succeed and providing compelling local content.
Identify, select and develop newsroom talent and inspire the staff by reinforcing the mission, providing meaningful feedback and creating opportunities for growth and achievement.
Interact with the Design Studio insuring that they meet local needs upholding the expected quality and efficiencies.
Ensure the newsroom’s operational and newshole budgets are managed according to operational needs and priorities in accordance with the Publisher.
Facilitate strong community connections with a relevant editorial voice and personal interaction.
Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years experience in journalism with strong ethics and integrity.
Experience as editor in a midsize – large market or the top editor in a smaller market.
Excellent organizational, communication, strategic and business skills.
