The Maynard Institute and Bay Area News Group, with sponsorship from The California Endowment, have partnered to launch OaklandEffect.com, a site dedicated to reporting on the impact of violence in Oakland. Visit http://oaklandeffect.com to read stories by Scott Johnson, our featured investigative reporter, as he explores the many costs of violence, from emotional trauma to financial costs to the city.

In conjunction with the site launch, the Maynard Institute hosted a webinar on June 8, 2012 with Scott Johnson in conversation with Aly Colón, a journalism trainer and former faculty member at the Poynter Institute.

MIJE/POLITICO/AU Journalism Training Program

The Maynard Institute will partner again in 2015 with POLITICO and American University to run the POLITICO Journalism Institute, a program that will bring  a dozen promising college students from around the country for training in covering politics and government.

The program will run from June 5-12. Expenses including transportation and housing will be covered. The application deadline is May 8.

"Expanding the diversity of the press corps that covers Washington continues to be a critical need. We are pleased to partner again with POLITICO and American University and build on the success of last year’s program in training a new generation of journalists, said Maynard Institute acting executive director Evelyn Hsu.
